Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF so large?
GIFs use a very inefficient compression format compared to modern video. A 5-second clip that’s 2MB as an MP4 can easily be 15–25MB as a GIF. To keep file sizes manageable: keep clips under 8 seconds, use 480px or smaller width, and choose 10–15fps. If file size is critical, consider sharing as an MP4 instead — it looks better and is a fraction of the size.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No — everything runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly (FFmpeg.wasm). Your video never leaves your device and no data is stored or transmitted anywhere.
Why does the GIF look washed out or have fewer colors?
GIFs are limited to a maximum of 256 colors per frame, compared to millions in video. This tool uses a two-pass palette optimization in FFmpeg to get the best possible color quality, but some color banding is inevitable — especially on gradients, skin tones, and complex backgrounds.
What frame rate should I use?
15fps is the sweet spot for most GIFs — smooth enough to look good, low enough to keep file sizes reasonable. Use 24fps if you need very smooth motion (like a slow-motion clip). Use 10fps for simple animations or when file size is a priority.
What width should I choose?
480px works well for most uses — social media, messaging apps, websites. Use 320px for smaller files. Only use 640px or original if you specifically need a large GIF, as file sizes grow dramatically with width.
Which browsers are supported?
The GIF Maker works in any modern browser supporting WebAssembly and SharedArrayBuffer: Chrome 92+, Edge 92+, Firefox 90+, and Safari 15.2+.
