Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between rotating and flipping?
Rotating turns the entire video frame by a set angle — 90° clockwise takes a landscape video and makes it portrait, 180° flips it upside down. Flipping mirrors the video along an axis: horizontal flip creates a left-right mirror image, vertical flip creates a top-bottom mirror. You can combine both — for example, rotating 90° and flipping horizontally — in a single operation.
Why is my video showing sideways on some devices?
Many phones record video with rotation metadata rather than physically rotating the frames. Most modern players read this metadata and display the video correctly, but some platforms (social media uploads, video editors, certain messaging apps) ignore the metadata and display the raw frames — resulting in a sideways or upside-down video. This tool physically re-encodes the rotation into the video frames so it displays correctly everywhere regardless of metadata support.
Will rotating change the video resolution?
Rotating 90° or 270° swaps the width and height of the video. A 1920×1080 landscape video becomes a 1080×1920 portrait video after a 90° rotation. The pixel count stays the same — only the dimensions swap. Rotating 180° keeps the same dimensions. Flipping never changes dimensions.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No — everything runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly (FFmpeg.wasm). Your video never leaves your device and no data is stored or transmitted anywhere.
Can I rotate and flip in the same step?
Yes — select a rotation and a flip option and both are applied in a single re-encode. There’s no quality difference compared to applying them separately, and it’s faster since the video only needs to be processed once.
Which browsers are supported?
The Rotate & Flip Video tool works in any modern browser supporting WebAssembly and SharedArrayBuffer: Chrome 92+, Edge 92+, Firefox 90+, and Safari 15.2+.
