How to Create a Transparent PNG Logo for Video Watermarks

Adding a watermark to your videos requires one thing above all else: a logo or text image with a transparent background. Without transparency, your watermark arrives as a white or coloured rectangle sitting on top of your footage — covering the content rather than overlaying it cleanly. This guide covers how to create or prepare a transparent PNG logo from scratch or from an existing image, and how to apply it as a watermark to any video for free.

Why PNG and Why Transparency Matter

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is the correct file format for watermarks because it supports an alpha channel — a layer of data that defines which parts of the image are transparent, semi-transparent, or fully opaque. JPEG does not support transparency. When you place a transparent PNG over a video, the video shows through wherever the alpha channel is transparent, and only your logo, text, or icon appears as an overlay.

A watermark PNG without transparency looks like this: your logo on a solid white or coloured box. A watermark PNG with transparency looks like this: only your logo, floating cleanly over the video frame. The difference is the alpha channel.

Option 1: Export Transparent PNG from Your Design Tool

If you created your logo in Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, or any design application, you can export it with transparency directly. The exact steps vary by application, but the key is to:

  • Ensure the canvas/artboard background is set to transparent, not white or any other colour
  • Export or download as PNG (not JPG, not PDF)
  • In Canva: click Share → Download → File type: PNG → check “Transparent background” (requires Canva Pro)
  • In Figma: select the frame, Export → PNG → export (Figma exports transparent backgrounds by default)
  • In Illustrator: File → Export → Export As → PNG → uncheck “White Background” in the export dialog

Option 2: Remove Background from an Existing Logo

If you have a logo on a white or solid-colour background and need to remove it, a background removal tool converts it to a transparent PNG. Free options include:

  • remove.bg — AI-powered background removal; excellent for logos with complex edges; free tier produces lower-resolution output, paid for full resolution
  • ImageToolShack Background Remover — part of our ImageToolShack network; free browser-based background removal, no uploads to external servers
  • GIMP (free, desktop) — use Fuzzy Select or Select by Color to select the white background, then delete it and export as PNG with alpha channel
  • Photopea (free, browser-based) — works identically to Photoshop; use Magic Wand to select and delete the background, export as PNG
Dark logos on light video, light logos on dark video A white or light-coloured logo disappears on light backgrounds. A dark logo disappears on dark footage. The most versatile watermark approach is either: (a) a white logo with a subtle dark drop shadow, which reads on any background, or (b) a semi-transparent version of your logo that blends with the content. Most video watermark tools let you adjust opacity — 40–60% opacity is the standard range for visible-but-unobtrusive watermarks.

Option 3: Create a Text Watermark as PNG

If you don’t have a logo, a simple text watermark — your channel name, website, or copyright notice — works just as well for protecting and branding your content. Create it in any image editor or free tool like Canva using a transparent background, white text, and your chosen font. Export as PNG with transparency. Text watermarks are clean, readable, and require no design skill.

Sizing Your Watermark PNG

The right watermark size depends on where you’ll place it and what resolution your videos are. General guidelines:

Video Resolution Recommended Watermark Width Placement
1920×1080 (1080p)200–300 px wideCorner; 20–30 px from edge
1280×720 (720p)140–200 px wideCorner; 15–20 px from edge
3840×2160 (4K)400–600 px wideCorner; 40–60 px from edge
1080×1920 (vertical/9:16)180–260 px wideBottom centre or corner

A watermark that occupies roughly 10–15% of the video width at 40–60% opacity is generally noticeable enough to attribute the content but unobtrusive enough not to detract from viewing. Avoid placing watermarks dead centre unless the intent is copy protection rather than attribution.

Adding the Transparent PNG Watermark to Your Video

1
Prepare your transparent PNG

Follow the steps above to ensure your logo is saved as a PNG file with a transparent background. Open it in any image viewer and check that the background shows as a checkerboard pattern (the universal indicator of transparency), not white.

2
Open the Add Watermark tool

Go to the free Add Watermark tool on VideoToolShack. Load your video file. Your video never leaves your device — processing runs in your browser.

3
Upload your PNG and set position and opacity

Upload your transparent PNG watermark. Choose corner placement (bottom-right is the convention for most creators), set opacity to 40–60%, and preview the result. Adjust size and position until it looks correct in the preview frame.

4
Apply and download

Click Apply Watermark and download the finished video. The watermark is now burned permanently into every frame. For guidance on removing a watermark you added yourself, see how to remove a watermark from your own video.
